Library / Media Center Policies

The library media center exists to serve the needs of the students and faculty of Dover City Schools by providing supplemental educational resources and a pleasant, purposeful, quiet atmosphere in which to do research, recreational reading, and study. Students should view the library media center as an extension of the classroom, a collection of resources and services that will enable them to complete class-related projects and pursue personal goals and interests.

The library media center is open to students every school day, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. , except when it is being used for testing, meetings, etc. The library media center will also be closed the first week of school for freshman orientation and staff training, and the last two weeks of school for inventory.

Students may sign out to the library media center from study hall one period per day. Students must arrive at the library from study hall within five minutes of the start of the period; students arriving late will be returned to study hall. The student’s school photo identification card must be presented at the circulation desk for attendance and computer use. Students needing to use the library for additional periods to complete class-related work must obtain permission and a pass from the librarian.

Students should be busy, quiet, and seated unless browsing for or checking out materials.

No calculator games, cell phones, or personal listening devices (radios, CD players, tape players) will be permitted the library media center.

No food, drink, or candy is permitted in the library media center.

Library materials may be checked out as follows: Reserve books and magazines, one period, for use in the library media center; reference books and audio visual resources, one day with permission from the librarian; back issues of magazines and all other books, two weeks.

Materials should be returned on time and in good condition. Magazines and books may be renewed once. Overdue fine is $.05 per day for books and magazines, $1.00 per day for audio visual items. Lost items must be paid for at replacement cost. If a student has one or more overdue items or $1.00 or more in fines, no further checkouts will be permitted until the items are returned and the fines are paid. Report cards and transcripts will be held at the end of the year for unreturned materials and fines of $1.00 or more.

Library media center computers may be used for class-related research of the Internet and the library catalog and databases and for word-processing and Powerpoint production. Games, chat rooms, and message boards are not permitted. A 16-unit laptop lab is available for classes to use either in the library media center or classroom. Laptops may be checked out to individual students for research or typing, only if all desktop computers are in use. Students may not take laptops out of the media center; faculty may check out laptops for classroom or home use.

Students may not use computers to listen to music or view video on the Internet unless they are adding these features to a Powerpoint presentation. They must present a pass from the assigning teacher in order to check out headphones and use personal CDs for this purpose.

Students who misuse the library media center will be subject to loss of library privileges and/or detention.
