Overview: Dover Middle School is proud to continue our Do.C.K. Program for the 2019-2020 school year. We want to remain true to the intent of the program: service to the community. We believe it is important for our young people to understand that giving back to the community is an important element of being a good citizen and that the best reward from this form of citizenship is intrinsic in nature. Additionally, we believe the Do.C.K. program gives us a great opportunity to connect our school community to the community-at-large in a positive way.
Membership: The Do.C.K. program is open to ALL Dover Middle School students. Meetings may occur throughout the school year, and any important information will be given to students via announcements. A reward trip at the end of the school year will offered to any students earning 12 service hours of approved, documented school or community service. The deadline for submitting earned hours will be in late April. Once a student has earned the needed hours, all documented service hours will need to be turned in to the office. Students participating in Do.C.K. are expected to be in good standing.
I. DMS Staff Member Raking Teams: On Saturday, November 16, 2019, DMS will embark on a massive leaf raking campaign. Rather than just asking students to participate with the help of their parents, we are also going to have DMS staff-led groups. These staff-led and parent-led groups will all meet at DMS on November 16 and then travel either with parent groups or via school bus to the various leaf raking sites around the community. This activity will run from 9-12, and will therefore count for 3 hours toward a student’s total for the year.
II. Parent-Led Raking Teams: We know some parents would like to be involved with their young people for this activity. Therefore, we will still encourage parent-led teams to take groups of students to various leaf raking sites around the community. Please note that all groups (both parent-led and staff-led) will meet at DMS before leaf raking on November 16 so that we may be one united team! Also, we plan on having refreshments and donuts the morning of the event to energize all of us before we get to work.
III. DMS Facility Crew: We plan to offer an hour here at the middle school once each in the fall and spring after school until 3:30. During this time, students will assist staff members with cleaning various areas around the school building. We plan to offer these days in September/ October and March / April.
I. Individual Do.C.K. Opportunities: Students may choose from a pre-selected menu of community service opportunities in and around the community. We have already contacted these organizations, and they are excited to have a group of students work with them to provide a service. Each student will need to receive a signed certificate from the “supervisor” of any of the activities listed below. The certificate will need to include the date(s) of service, service(s) provided, hours served, and signature of supervisor.
